Animation Tools

  • Blender — The pride and joy. I use this for a lot of my animation and video editing.
  • POV Ray — Mainly used for stills but I finally figured out the animation functions. Message me or look on my are.na for more POV Ray learning links. Really cool tool with a great look.
  • TouchDesigner — Started using this for post-production and adding in 2D effects but quickly realized all the 3D animation possibilities. You can even make a wonky game in there. The power of live visuals lies here at your fingertips...
  • Pose Ray — I use this to load objs into POV Ray sometimes

Textures

  • Texturer — Great free texture library. Lots of nasty damaged textures
  • GIMP — great free tool for image editing

3D Assets

  • Free Retro 3D asset Library — Put together by miziziz. Lots of great stuff in here for getting a project going.
  • The Models Resource — Hundreds of models from old games. Great way to get inspo or just check out the changes in each generation of 3D.

Audio Tools

  • Audacity — Decent free audio tool. Hard to make full songs but great for mangling sounds and creating individual sound effects. I like the ability to reduce sample rate heavily to make mid 2000s like digital distortion, as well as the time stretch functions
  • Ableton Live — Definately not free. But this is my go to music making tool. Thankfully it is something you can purchase one time and actually own. Love ableton.

Youtube Channels I like

  • Miziziziz — Inspiring artist and game creator. I recommend both his udemy and youtube tutorials. The blender one is what got me started in 3D art
  • About Here — Hero of Vancouver (a) best videos out there
  • TAPEWORM corp — Another hero of Vancouver (b) change your world
  • Zev Magasis — super cool filmaker. has some pretty dark videos but I love how he captures the world in a dreamy unsettling way. always makes me think of un-escapable fate when I watch his videos. A big inspiration for my own stuff.
  • Jonas Čeika CCK Philosophy — great essays pairing philosophy with modern media. great way to brush up on concepts and interpret writers in a new way. love the simpsons and cyberpunk videos
  • PilotRedSun — You already know. unreal videos and a huge inspiration for any humour or surreal imagery in my animaiton
  • Trey the Explainer — Beautiful new way to tell historic stories and humanize history. I love the "changes made to the bible" video explaining the original ending of the Gospel of Mark
  • PJ Visuals — Nice well paced TouchDesigner tutorials.
